Wheaton Griffin oversees the operations of the YMCA of Greater New York’s YMCA Camp Talcott, YMCA Camp McAlister and YMCA Greenkill Conservation and Adventure Camp, all located in Huguenot, NY.
Wheaton came to the YMCA of Greater New York in June 2008 from the YMCA of Metropolitan Birmingham’s Camp Cosby, where he served as Executive Director since 2001, and Camp Dudley YMCA in Westport, NY, since 1994.
With classical training in psychology, the first half of Wheaton’s career included posts as Director of Psychological Services at New Haven’s Gesell Institute for Human Development and as School Psychologist for the Sherburne-Earlville (NY) Central School District, all culminating in his co-founding the Griffin Center for Human Development in 1989, which focused on research and advocacy for the improvement of schools through applying the principles of human development.
Wheaton is active in the American Camp Association, the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is a co-founder of the Northeast Consortium of Foundation Camps.
He holds advanced degrees in psychology, including a PhD from United States International University, MS from McNeese State University and BS from St. Lawrence University.
