“Renewing the YMCA for the communities of our great city is our highest priority.” Board Chair Diana Taylor and CEO Jack Lund.
The Y is coming to the Rockaways. Construction has begun on the new 44,000 square-foot YMCA on 2.2 acres at Beach 73rd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard. The new Rockaways YMCA at Arverne-by-the-Sea is a cornerstone of New York’s economic and community development strategies for neighborhoods in need. The new Y will be a neighborhood anchor bringing together diverse and disconnected blocks and making them healthy, functioning and desirable communities. The new Y will be home to time-tested programs in the areas of academic achievement, family health, recreation and fitness, youth and leadership.
Equally important, the Y will be a source of jobs for local Rockaways residents. The new Y promises to employ more than 100 staff members and will help spur additional economic development in the area. For 160 years, the YMCA of Greater New York has been the place for positive life-changing events. We are ready to make a difference in the Rockaways. And we will be there for good!
In the words of Mayor Mike Bloomberg, “when it opens, the YMCA will be the heart of neighborhood life, just like the Ys are and have been throughout the city for more than 150 years. Building this Y is something the people of the Rockaways have worked long and hard for. It’s going to make an enormous difference in this community.”
About the new Rockaways YMCA at Arverne-by-the-Sea
The YMCA will be built as part of the 117-acre Arverne-by-the-Sea community of 2,300 residential units and will serve the entire Rockaway Peninsula.
The state-of-the-art facility will boast the YMCA’s largest aquatic center in the five boroughs, featuring two pools—a four-lane lap pool plus a family pool with a single depth entry, spray and climbing play features, and an 18-foot sliding board. As the only indoor aquatic center available to the community on the Rockaway Peninsula, the Y will provide much-needed water safety and lifeguard training programs.
In addition, the new Y will include a full service enclosed gymnasium, healthy living center and studios, locker rooms, community space, and outdoor recreation and playfields.
