Come join a great community of people exploring their creativity and expand your mind, body, spirit! The ArtWorks program offers a variety of classes in the visual arts, including stained glass, drawing, water-color, and photography. The diversity of classes includes all levels of handbuilding and wheel as well as photo ceramics, majolica and other specialized techniques. This is a friendly, supportive studio with ample open time for you to practice as well as learn from others.

Open Studio Time

Open studio is available in all classrooms during posted hours to adults who are

enrolled in a ceramics class. No one is permitted to work in a room during class time unless you are enrolled in that class.

Beginning/Intermediate Watercolor

Students develop their skills in mixing colors as well as experimenting with a variety of surface techniques to add interest and texture to their work. Classes do some painting trips to Central Park, weather permitting. No previous experience is necessary.

 

Beginning/Intermediate Drawing

Students will learn basic drawing techniques such as line and value. This class is appropriate for someone with no prior experience in rendering and for those who want to further develop their skills. Classes work from still life or in the park, weather permitting. Drawing and Pastel Painting

Learn to combine the beautiful techniques of pastel painting with your drawing. Development of basic skills for using and applying color with the skillful application of pastels. Class will work from still life with occasional models.

Learn to create beautiful glass objects using this ancient craft. Students learn to create patterns, cut, foil, and solder stained glass into a variety of useful and sculptural forms. Ample individual assistance enables each person to pursue his/her individual projects. Class time includes an hour of open studio.

This class will be an introduction to all methods of working with clay. Students will also learn a variety of surface techniques such as painting with colored slips and underglazes, as well as traditional glazing methods. Intermediate students may continue to pursue their individual projects.

An introduction and expansion of skills in working with clay. Students learn basic ceramic construction techniques of pinch, coil and slab as well as the use of an assortment of molds and sprigging methods. Attention will also be paid to developing patterned and decorative surface techniques. Intermediate level students receive individual attention for ongoing projects.

 

Photo-Ceramics

An exploration of various ways of printing a photographic image onto a ceramic surface including silkscreen, PhotoEZ, Rice Paper Transfer, and laser transfer. Students will learn techniques for printing onto greenware, bisque, and glazed pieces. You will learn ways of printing onto both flat surfaces and rounded forms. How to enhance the printed image by means of hand coloring with various types of underglazes such as pastels, watercolors and colored pencils will be included.

Develop wheel skills while focusing on subtle aspects of form and function. Refinement of techniques for functional feet and handles as well as incorporating texture into the thrown surface. Glazing techniques will be demonstrated.

An intensive study of how to refine and develop wheel skills, as well as increasing familiarity with studio glazes. Breakthrough to a greater expertise by exploring carving, painting with slips, and majolica. Recommended for those who wish to achieve a higher level of expertise.

WORKSHOPS:

NEW! Paint It, Frame It, Serve It!

Tuition Fee: $60. Supply Fee: $30 (payable to instructor at first class meeting)
Never worked in clay before? Join this workshop and use brightly colored glazes to decorate your own personalized tiles to create a fun object for your home. Stamping, painting with underglazes and glazing will be utilized to create individual 12” x 12” mirror frames or serving trays. All materials will be supplied by instructor.
Class meets on two consecutive Saturdays so pieces can be fired during the week.
For adults or young adults 12 and up.

 

NEW! Throw, Facet, Stretch, Dart!!
Neil Patterson October 17th & 18th 10:00AM- 4:00PM
Tuition Fee: $225.
This hands on workshop will focus on the potter’s wheel as a creative tool. Focus on exploring process and experimenting with new techniques. Traditional pottery forms will be covered as well as assembling and altering thrown forms. Demonstrations will include making oval pots: cutting “darts” to articulate forms and creating unique shapes through assembling. Emphasis on exploring the potential for a variety of surfaces and textures. Participants should have some throwing experience.

NEW! Beginner Beading

October 5th-Nov. 16th (six class meetings, no class on Oct. 12)
Fees: Members $80. Non-members: $160.
If you’ve always wanted to make jewelry with seed beads but were too intimidated, this is the class for you. You will learn two simple stitches, peyote and netting, and make at least one project with each such has a finished bracelet or necklace. The teacher has infinite patience. Supply kits will be available for purchase from the teacher.
