Take It From a 93-Year-Old Yogi: Stretch, Hold and Laugh

Ronnie Arond, 93, began taking yoga classes 40 years ago at the Cross Island Y.M.C.A. in Queens, where she was teaching synchronized swimming. She began teaching yoga using an approach “made up of all things I borrowed from other teachers.” She taught both at home and at the Y.M.C.A., where she has a sizable following, even after taking time off to recover from a broken hip after a fall last year. Bellerose couple have been each other’s Valentines for more than 70 years

The married couple, Ronnie and Hank Arond, now 91 and 92, found love on March 4, 1943. Having been members since 1952 they are very involved with the Cross Island YMCA on Hillside Avenue, where they have been members since 1952. Ronnie has been teaching yoga for over 20 years, along with synchronized swimming. In her spare time, she performs scenes from plays with a drama club for seniors called STAR. Read more…

Touch-A-Truck at YMCA

The Cross Island YMCA in Bellerose will host its second annual Touch-a-Truck fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26. The event is designed to be a family-friendly afternoon where children can get up close to and inside cars and trucks that they see on the streets every day, including police cars, fire engines, dump trucks, tow trucks and others.
