Christmas came early as Randy Foye and Isaiah Whitehead joined 30 local kids for a shopping spree at Modell’s, right across the street from Barclays Center. The rookie point guard is a Brooklyn native who starred at Coney Island’s Lincoln High School before going on to Seton Hall and the NBA. Ten of the kids in attendance came from the Coney Island YMCA. Treyger organizes softball game to help autistic kids

Councilmember Mark Treyger has beaten plenty of opponents in his political career, but on July 14, he won a victory against autism. Treyger (D-Coney Island-Gravesend-Bensonhurst) organized a charity softball game at MCU Park to raise money for a Coney Island-based non-profit group that works to raise awareness of autism. Comedian Damon Rozier of the United Spinal Association and Coney Island YMCA Executive Director Sam Moore threw out the ceremonial first pitches. Read more…

Anti-violence block party held in Coney Island

The Coney Island Anti-Violence Collaborative put on a block party with the Coney Island YMCA to address gun violence in the community today. The move comes after the recent increase of shootings in the neighborhood. Organizers are hoping with the help of community events and workshops, they can get kids off the streets and involved in educational and constructive activities. Read more…
