Photos: Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA’s 3rd Annual ‘Brooklyn Honors’

On Thursday, October 15, “the Bed-Stuy Y” held its third annual “Brooklyn Honors” awards ceremony and fundraiser, a cornerstone event that not only gives recognition to the branch’s most venerable supporters and those living and/or working in Brooklyn who are making a difference, but also it serves as an important opportunity to raise money for the program’s that support the 12,500 area youth each year. NYC swim team breaking records and busting myths

While lots of other kids are sleeping in and playing video games this summer, a group of dedicated swimmers are hard at work, preparing for the upcoming competitive season. The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Piranhas team, in Brooklyn, N.Y., has won nearly a dozen trophies since forming in 1997. This year’s team has 45 swimmers, the majority African American. Eighteen of the team’s swimmers qualified to compete at the state championship level—an accomplishment that few black athletes achieve. Read more…

A boy praises the principal of his Brooklyn school and a fund-raising campaign takes off

Recently Human of New York's Instagram account featured a story of Vidal Chastanet, a 13-year-old from Brownsville. In the caption, Chastanet said his principal, Ms. Lopez, was his biggest inspiration. Since posting, Chastanet, Lopez and Mott Hall Bridges Academy became overnight sensations receiving over $1 million in donations. This is not the first time HONY raised money for a great cause. Previously, the account raised over $100,000 for the YMCA in Bedford-Stuyvesant. Read more…
